Glorious! Review

Tuesday night is theatre night and we were invited to the Everyman Cheltenham for Glorious! A Play about a singer, who could not sing! Starring Corrie's Wendi Peters,

Dubbed ‘the worst singer in the world’, Glorious! is the true story of American socialite Florence Foster Jenkins, who was known for her flamboyant costumes, enigmatic performances and decidedly off-key voice.

Starring Wendi Peters (Coronation Street) as Florence Foster Jenkins and Matthew James Morrison (EastEnders), as Cosme McMoon, in this 20th anniversary production, this hilarious production played to rave reviews at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre and is the feel-good comedy we’ve been waiting for.

Where do I start? As we all know Wendi Peters, can really play any role, effortlessly, she was brilliant, portraying the worst Singer in the world, "Florence Foster Jenkins" she sung brilliantly "off-key" which is probably very difficult to do, when you are trained to sing in tune. Her comedic timing and comic lines, worked perfectly alongside Matthew James Morrison (EastEnders), who played Cosme McMoon. They worked effortlessly together on stage to portray this quite funny story.

Hilariously funny with some dreadful singing is to be expected, but the way she did it gave the audience a good laugh, but applause at certain points throughout the play was certainly worth it.

One scene change, with music, felt a little odd, with what felt like the end of act 1 being stretched out with a musical interlude, only assuming it was to change the set to the recording studio; this felt and I think some of the audience left being confused whether the house lights were coming back on or we were continuing, but as polite as everyone is at the Everyman, the audience waited in anticipation to see what happened next, I think perhaps some dialogue could have been said during the music interlude, just to easily indicate that it wasn't an interval moment.

Another slight note, is that the play makes no announcement about mobile phones, which would have been a good benefit for the audience on Tuesday as the phone rang out in the audience a few times, making the non-head mic performance hard to hear with the loudness of someones mobile phone ringing out. perhaps a reminder at the beginning regardless of the shows requests to ensure that we can hear what is happening on stage.

Overall a great night out, with some great comedy and questionable (but purely for the play) singing.

It runs until Saturday, ticket details below.https://www.everymantheatre.org.uk/shows/glorious/#tickets
