So, you know the film, highly successful, however slightly changed some of the songs, specially the one at the end, the one I enjoy the most... so I was interested to see how this would be in the UK Tour of Mean Girls
Tuesday we were invited to Cheltenham Everyman to see Mean Girls, I knew the film and had heard the Broadway soundtrack so knew really what the show would be, What I didn't know, was that Fay Tozer from Steps, would be in it... playing several roles, and being hilariously funny in the scenes she did have.
When it got going, it gave the opening impression of a school production (nothing to do with the fact it was set in a school), I was thinking "oh dear", but it soon settled down and the vocals were stunning and the performances were incredible.
Meet The Plastics – Regina, Gretchen and Karen. They rule North Shore High and will burn anyone who gets in their way. Home-schooled Cady Heron may think she knows a thing or two about survival of the fittest thanks to her zoologist parents, but high school is a whole new level of savage. When Cady devises a plan to end Regina's reign, she learns the hard way that you can't cross a queen bee without getting stung.
GEORGIE BUCKLAND who plays JANIS SARKISIAN and MAX GILL as DAMIAN HUBBARD are your narrators for this musical, it helps you understand the storyline with some iconic comedy. Georgie Buckland is a powerhouse, and has a incredible range and set of songs in the show and you can feel the raw emotion during some of her numbers, leaving you wanting to jump up and give a standing ovation. Whilst Max is hilarious, with his sunglasses gag and they really draw you into the story. These are 2 incredible actors, who are ones to watch in future productions, as they work really well together, and they have a great vocal ability, Georgie in the second act had a track, which I said WOW.
The show is very fast paced, so there is no hanging about, the scenes flow nicely into each other, the songs are one after another. it's very well-rehearsed, which means the show runs without hiccups. This is what you want in a production. Some shows, do grind to a halt, or don't show the actual talent of the incredible cast on stage, however this show does everything right.
I was concerned that the show would slightly change the "I see Stars" song, like in the Movie Musical, but nope, it was just like the broadway version, in somewhat, even better as it was heartfelt and the cast genuinely looked like they enjoyed being on stage.
SOPHIE POURRET plays Karen Smith, her character acts really stupid and she does this effortlessly, she has multiple comedy one liners, leaving the audiences howling with laughter during the musical; including the line about her being on the Ferris Wheel and apologising for announcing it... Honestly, the show has so many one-liners, they keep coming.
Overall the show is great! It's a great night out and very popular.
